Rear Suspension
All components here are supplied by ARL. We are using lighter billet carriers instead of the heavier original cast units.
The manual shows most of the setup and it is all straight forward as long as you take care to get various spacers in the right position.
Hub, shaft and carriers.
The suspension arms are fitted as per the fronts with due care about the nylon and steel bushes and their fitment.
The lower link of the upright is quite complicated with lots of spacers and collars that have to be in the right position.
There is also a small drop link that connects from the lower link to the bottom damper mount. Make sure that fits squarely against the spacers and is not distorted when it is all tightened up.
The top link may need some spacers fitted to make it line up and look sensible.
Loosely assemble the bottom and top links and see that everything is sitting happily with no distortion or deflection as the mounting nuts are tightened.
The rear mounting bolts need to be longer as they are used to mount the rear subframe later in the build.
The lower links need to be set up for approximately the correct camber. ARL have information about the distance between the centre lines of the inside and outside pickup points. So screw the lower links into the swing arm to get the correct measurement.
240mm I believe. The top link will have to wait until we are able to properly set the camber.
Finally fit the carrier and hub. The shaft nut has a huge torque figure, you'll need a big torque wrench.
The brake calipers are fitted here with the bleed nipple upper most. This aids bleeding but it means the handbrake cable will now fit at the bottom which is not ideal. As this is not a IVA compliant road car I can take some liberties here.
We need to make a small cut out on the corner of the floor pan before the wheels will fit.
If you already know this you can make the cut out before fitting the floor pan. I didn't so I had to cut it in place. The manual shows this as the edge turned up through 90 degrees but without proper metal forming tools it was almost impossible. I settled for just making a square cut out.
It could probably have been a little smaller but it will do.
